Fairfax Media’s publications Kaikoura Star, Stuff, The Dominion Post, The Marlborough Express and The Press have won best coverage of a major news event for the Kaikoura earthquake at the 2017 Canon Media Awards.
Fairfax Media acting Managing Director Andrew Boyle says the Monday of the event was Stuff’s biggest ever traffic day, and the team sprang into action to focus resource ensuring they could provide New Zealanders with the information they needed.
“The circumstances were extraordinary. Our journalists on the ground roughed it in tents, and we had to figure out how to get our newspapers into the town without road access. Newspapers were vital for those isolated in Kaikoura and it was a massive team effort from our newsrooms across the country to tell such an important story for New Zealand.”
Other award highlights include Stuff’s #buythisbeachNZ campaign which won Best editorial campaign or project - another collaborative effort across newsrooms, and The Nelson Mail won Newspaper of the Year (up to 30,000 circulation).
Boyle says Nelson region editor Victoria Guild and her team have driven outstanding coverage such as the Wasp Wipeout Week and the At Home project, reflecting stories that resonate with the local community.
Also of note is the Feilding-Rangitikei Herald which won Canon Community Newspaper of the Year. This is a new community paper combining three titles in the region, and Boyle says this award shows how newspapers can thrive in a new life.
Senior reporter Nikki Macdonald took the title of Feature Writer of the Year for articles published in The Dominion Post and Sunday Star-Times and Waikato-based senior reporter Aaron Leaman was awarded Regional Journalist of the Year for the second year running, as well as the nib Health Journalism Scholarship - Senior award. Wellington visual journalist Ross Giblin won Best news video as well as Videographer of the Year.
Boyle says he’s proud of the Fairfax team who consistently produce excellent work: “The Canon Media Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the outstanding journalism in our country, and my congratulations go out to all winners.”
